Planning A Fire Escape
Practice fire escape plans with your
kids at least once a month. That sounds excessive, but kids need
the frequent repetition. Here's what to do:
- Make sure everyone knows to leave the
house immediately. You have anywhere from seconds to minutes
to get out after the alarms sound.
- You should have at least two ways out
of every room - a door and a window are the two most likely routes.
Practice feeling your way out with all the lights off or your
eyes closed.
- To avoid injury, equip second-floor
rooms with a fire escape ladder (like the Kidde 2-Story Escape
Ladder, about $40 at The Home Depot).
- Designate a meeting spot outdoors safely
away from the house. Once there, do a head count. In a real fire,
call 911 from a neighbor's.
