Protecting yourself from mosquitoes and West Nile virus, from the CDC:

  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET. Do not apply to children's hands, because children tend to stick their fingers in their mouths.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks when possible outdoors.
  • Be aware of peak mosquito hours - from dusk to dawn - and take extra care to use repellent or avoid outdoor activity.
  • Drain standing water by emptying water from flower pots, pets' dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, cans, clogged rain gutters, discarded tires.
  • Install or repair screens.
  • Report dead birds to local authorities.
  • rganize neighborhood clean-ups to rid areas of standing water.
